Guest Post- AFL By Vishal

AFL
Australian Football League

Australia is full of sports, one my favourite sports is the Australian Football League or footy for short. There are 18 teams, they are: Western Bulldogs, Carlton, GWS, Brisbane lions, Adelaide crows, Port Adelaide, Essendon, Fremantle, West Coast Eagles, Geelong cats, Gold coast suns, Collingwood, Richmond, St. Kilda, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Hawthorn and Sydney swans. Every team has its own mascot and its own logo.

Here are all the team’s logos:

But what is A.F.L? Well it is where two teams verse each other to win so they can go up the ladder and in the grand final the top two teams in the ladder verse each other to win, that year’s premiership cup. The ball which is used in footy is an oval shaped ball with 4 sides and in one of the sides there are eight stiches holding the pumping end. The footy ground is shaped like an oval and the scores are scored as a goal or a point. For a goal you get 6 points and the goals are set up like the poles in the picture:

My favourite team is Collingwood and I believe that they are one of the best. My favourite Collingwood players are Alan Didak, Chris Tarrant and Darren Jolly.

There are only 18 players allowed on a footy oval and those positions are: Full back, Full forward, wing 1, wing 2, Centre half back, Centre half forward, Forward pocket 1, Forward pocket 2, Back pocket 1, Back pocket 2, Half forward flank 1, Half forward flank 2, Half back flank 1, Half back flank 2, Rover 1, Rover 2, Ruck man and Ruck rover. Here are all their positions in the oval:

Here is a little chart of what team everyone in my class goes for:

We are sorry if your team is not in the chart but these teams are all the teams that our class goes for.

Here is short Kahootz animation about what a real A.F.L match can look like:

What team do go for and why?

Do play football for a club?

How many ways can you kick a footy?

  1. Hi Vishal

What a great post! I am a mad Collingwood fan and my most favourite player is Daisy Thomas. I teach Prep at St. Luke's in Blackburn South and last term we had a visit from Harry O'Brien to talk to us about his work with UNICEF. He was a very impressive speaker and passionate about his cause.

I'm so glad you have written this post all about AFL because our overseas visitors don't really know what Aussie rules is all about - fantastic work! You have presented such a clear explanation of what the AFL is.

Good luck for the rest of the season. I hope we will be at the Grand final and singing our great club song!

  2. Great post, Vishal. I love how we Aussies are so passionate about the game!!! I am a Cats supporter, so have experienced a lot of happiness of late. However, that follows 40 years of disappointment. It's important that we keep loving our team through the hard years!

I teach Grade 5 and 6 so was interested in your blog!

  3. Hi Vishal,
Love your post - I'm a Collingwood supporter too, so always interested to read about them. As a teacher I'm really impressed by how many tools you've used to give us all this interesting information - movies, images, diagrams, a graph - wow! Glad to see so many of your classmates are Collingwood supporters as well.

  4. Hi Vishal,

I really enjoyed your post. I teach 7th graders in the United States so was not aware of what teams were in the AFL and how the game is played. Your descriptions of the AFL were quite interesting. In particular, the video clip of the team logos and the animation of what an AFL match is like were great! Occasionally, there are AFL matches shown on cable here. I will make it a point to watch some this year.

    Nice job!

  5. Dear Vishal

We were really excited to see a post about AFL as we are from New Zealand and have only heard about the game, Aussie Rules.

You probably know that us New Zealanders are really into Rugby. We noticed some difference between Rugby and AFL. These are: your pitch is oval like the ball whereas a Rugby pitch is a rectangle (a rugby ball is the same as your AFL ball), your players wear singlets and our players wear shirts, and rugby has only two goal posts at each end and you have four.

Could you please tell us what happens with the four goal posts?

We look forward to your reply.

      Reading group and room 24,

I use to watch rugby and I enjoyed it, there are some differences with a footy ball and rugby and the four goal post represent 1 point and 6 points.

  7. Hi Vishal,

Great post! I am so proud of the effort you have put into writing your guest post and your attention to detail.

You already know that I am an avid Blues supporter and I am sure that is why you chose Collingwood to defeat them in your animation.

I do not play footy for a club and I am not very good at kicking a footy either! Maybe I should get you to teach me.

You should be very proud of the response that your post has generated! Especially the retweet from Nathan Brown, number 16 from Collingwood. How exciting.

    Keep up the fantastic work.

  8. Hi Vishal,

I loved your post! I love AFL too but I am a West Coast supporter. You may have already known that though!

I really loved how you put in a pie chart of all the teams the students in your grade follow and then apologised for the other teams that aren't in your graph.

Did you like making the kahootz animation? There is so much you can do on Kahootz - it's great!!

I don't play football, but I use to go outside and have a kick with my friends back when I was younger. I could kick straight, but the ball didn't go very far!

    Keep up the great work.
